Special Enrollment Periods: start with your life event

Identify the event, timing, and documents that may let you enroll outside the annual Marketplace window.

An event must meet the rules

A Special Enrollment Period allows qualifying people to enroll in or change Marketplace coverage outside Open Enrollment. Losing qualifying health coverage, marriage, birth, adoption, and certain moves can create opportunities, but the details differ by event.

An everyday description of a change is not enough to establish eligibility. For example, divorce or legal separation without losing coverage does not qualify under that particular rule, and moving only for medical treatment or a vacation does not qualify as a permanent move. Review the official explanation that matches your circumstances.

Check timing before making a coverage decision

Enrollment opportunities are time limited. Some situations allow action before expected coverage loss, while others depend on an event that has already happened. Use the current official timing rules and your actual event date.

Write down when the event occurred or will occur, when your old coverage ends, and what the Marketplace says about the next plan's start date. If you are unsure how a rule applies, seek Marketplace help promptly instead of waiting for the annual enrollment period.

Be ready to confirm the event

Your Marketplace Eligibility Notice will explain whether documents are needed. For coverage loss, documents must show the lost coverage and its end date. Follow the notice's instructions and document deadline. Selecting a plan, confirming eligibility, and paying the first premium are separate parts of getting coverage in place.

If the notice does not require documents, you do not need to submit them simply because another person's situation did.

Practical event checklist

Make a one-page event record before you call for help. It can save you from explaining a complicated timeline differently each time. Keep uncertain details marked as questions and use documents to resolve them.

  • Name the exact life event rather than using a broad label.
  • Record the event date and any coverage end date.
  • Read the current rule for that event and your situation.
  • Save the Eligibility Notice and list every required next step.
  • Gather the acceptable documents named in your notice.
  • Submit documents through the instructed channel and keep confirmation.
  • Confirm the new coverage start date and premium-payment requirement.
  • Follow up on a missing or unclear decision promptly.
